[UPDATE] Sony details Firmware 2.60

UPDATE: Firmware 2.60 is now available to download.
Original Article: The next Firmware update for the PlayStation 3 is quickly approaching and as always, Sony is detailing the entire update on the Official PlayStation Blog. While key things users have been asking for such as cross-game chat, new PSN avatars and MKV support are not implemented in this update, cool additions include an upgrade to the photo gallery and DivX 3.11 support.
Believe it or not, the new photo gallery application is actually quite nifty. All of the added features within the application give users a plethora of options when it comes to arranging and displaying all of their digital photos.
The blog lists the added features as such: "Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface."
Of course, this isn't the only change coming into play with Firmware 2.60. Guests can now access the PlayStation Store in order to entice them to sign up for the network (which is free anyways) and start downloading.
We've included Eric Lempel's walk-through video below.

hmmm, yeah... Personally, I don't care about the new Photo feature because, 1st: I didn't buy a PS3 for that, 2nd: my PS3 is 40GB model, so no memory card slots (I know there's USB but i always use the memory card slots). Maybe it would be better if 2.70 will add PS2 compatibility, but once again, I must be dreaming.
I only bought the PS3 for its games and free online gaming, not for some photo sorting...(I WOULD be interested if they inserted Photoshop though...)

I hope we get a more desirable update around GDC or E3.

Uhhh, I never use the photos feature. I like to keep my hard drive cleared for demos and other content. I do wish they'd add a screen capture(print screen) feature to PS3 where you could capture any scene from any game you are in and you could upload it to your Photobucket, or Facebook account straight from your PS3. I think that would be cool and a great marketing tool. Built in YouTube recording, like in PJ Eden would be great also. If you could show your friends the awesome stuff you can do on a PS3, it might sell more consoles. Also, when are we actually going to get in game music? WHEN!?!?!? No good games support it the way they have it now. Why didn't they just make it hardware based for every game instead of relying on devs to put it into ever game they make? Another thing I wish we had was a voice chat messaging system, so you could chat with another friend in whatever game you were playing instead of stopping the game for 5 minutes just to type something out. So what am I saying? They wasted their time making another thing that nobody will ever use when there are better things they could be working on.
Honestly, can nobody get their priorities straight anymore? Out of all the stuff the customers want, they put this thing out there? Yay, it's free, but I'm sure Sony had to devote money and man-hours to this thing when they could have put it towards fixing more important things that we complain about ALL THE TIME!!! Nobody EVER talks about photos on their PS3. Why, because nobody cares. People use the PS3 for playing video games and watching movies. Mainly though, playing video games. And when they play their video games, they would like to listen to the music they have on their PS3 and talk to their buddies without having to use a keyboard, let alone a virtual keyboard you have to use your controller to type stuff in with. Being able to do easy stuff WHILE playing video games, that's a cool feature. Being able to have a slideshow of photos, that's a lame feature that nobody will ever use. Why does nobody want to use it, because it's pointless of having a photo slideshow while playing a video game. People might try it out, but it's not something they're going to use on a daily, weekly, or even monthly basis. If Sony really wants to do something worth the time and money, make an update that allows us to do something while playing a video game. And what's the deal with guests being able to get on the PS Store. If somebody hooks up their PS3, then they're going to register so they can play games online with their buddies. Why would ANYONE hook theirs up online and not register? Another thing they "fixed" that was never broken and that nobody complained about.
While talking about complaints, here's somethin I wish they'd fix. Put the controller battery life bar on the top left corner of the screen so it won't cover the time when I quickly hit the PS button to see what time it is. I have to wait for that stupid life bar thing to go away before I read the time. It's seconds out of my life to wait for that thing to go away to see how much time has passed. Oh, I could hold down on the PS button to get a better screen, but it takes just as long, and it tires out my poor thumb :( It's not a big problem, it's just a personal pet peeve of mine. Also, would it kill them to give us the day of the week on there? How about an alarm feature as well that would pop up reminders in the middle of playing video games? I'm playing my PS3 and miss a TV show, or forget to turn off the dinner the oven, or to call somebody, or pick somebody up, because I'm really into playing a game. Stuff like this would be very useful for everybody. Something this advanced should come with an alarm clock with reminders and even a calculator. Of course they must be able to be used while in game, or else they're useless.

what a crock of sh!!t ... xmb needs an overhaul of features ... music being one of them. I can't find any music on my PS3 because I can't organise them into proper albums (i.e where a compilation has been made.
Organising anything on PS3 is a complete pain, this overly useless photo gallery is a complete waste of their dev time.
PlayTV and iCreate are missing some very simple features that we need. Like export to PSP rather than M2TS ... and iCreate to be more like sony vega

uhhh...I could already do all that with the pictures and slide shows. Well, except for being able to arrange them by anything but the year I took them(I hope this means we can have a more percise arrangement).
And they REALLY REALLY REALLY need to fix the PS3 browser's JAVA SCRIPT PROBLEM. You damn bafoons! Fix the Javascript already! Please? Please? Because you did break it after all.

This update is so poor I am almost lost for words, does anyone use the photo features?
And has ANYONE ever said:
"I really wish I could sign in as a guest on my PS3 and access the PS Store, that would make my day"
As usual Sony, your incompetence astounds me...

yup. I bought the ps3 to be my gaming and media center. Do I use every feature every time? no, but the point is I have the option to do so and it is why I went and spent the 600$ for the MGS bundle. The value proposition is astounding.

How about REAL in-game XMB? I find it hard to believe that it's impossible to access system settings/features while a game is paused. Case in point: R6V. 1080i is enabled on my set, making the game look like absolute a55. I have to quit the game, change settings, and restart the game, and hope what I did worked(it did). Now I ask: is xmb system access that hard to implement? Sorry, had to rant for a sec.

so the guy in the video wants some feedback? What a complete waste of time! I have a 60GB PS3 and I STILL don't use photos or use it as a tool to show off photos. I'm running out of space with all the installs and updates. Not to mention downloadable stuff. I just don't understand why they would waste their time on something so pointless when they know what the reaction of the community will be. The people that were farking around with this could have been making home a reality faster, or they could be pushing things through EU's Store, or they could be working on BC, or getting more PSOne games out there. I just can't believe it.......

@23 & @ 32
Neither of you seem to understand that some people haven't ripped all their CD's via PS3, if you have them on a seperate HDD and then transfer them across then you can slip into difficulties. You can't group update MP3 info so if you've used some poor ripping software or written the music yourself then burned to CD you have to individually update the information that the files hold.
Beyond that your accusation saying that I don't know how to use my PS3 is unfounded and inaccurate. I'm a frickin dev for f's sake. You wanna tell Jenson Button that he can't drive ... stfu!

but i can already display photos on my ps3 why do i need to display in what looks like DNA strands? what i can't do is emulate a sega genesis/megadrive. Maybe sega should make an emulator for ps3 that plays all sega games from master system to dreamcast and they could charge for licensed roms and the price depends on the system it's from

@#8 We already have in game music. Its up to the developers to use it if they want. and Sony cant make it mandatory because of some kinda Patent that microsoft has.

@#11. I'm not sure where you've been. But the PS3 has had these features for a long time now. You can organize all your music, videos, demos, psn games and photos. Just by simply pressing the square button. example. I've got all my psn games in one folder, and I have named that folder "psngames" I've got all my demos in a separate folder. I've named that folder, "demos". To name a folder, just simply give every demo the same exact album name, and they will come together in a folder separating from your other stuff. You can do this with all your music, videos, photos and psn games/demos.

I know on all of the forums all I see is person after person complaining about how hard it is to organize the photos on their PS3. It's awesome that Sony has taken the time to really listen to PS3 owners feedback and has really given us something useful that we can appreciate. Unlike something dumb as say the ability to actually access something from the in-game XMB other than just look at it. It is nice to know that I can now sort my porn into girls who are smiling and those that aren't. Nothing ticks me off more than someone who is all happy and smiling.
